The Korean Society of Critical Care Medicine () was founded in December 19, 1980 as an organization to support the efforts of clinicians in their practice and development of critical care medicine in Korea. Professor HJ Lee, MD (internist) attended the meeting of the foundation of the Western Pacific Association of Critical Care Medicine (WPACCM) which was held in the Tokyo in July 26th, 1980. The motivation of foundation of the had been derived from foundation of WPACCM. Executive board members of the have been composed of president, vice president and chairman of boards of trustee, secretary general, treasurer, scientific and publication, insurance, public relation and auditor. The first President and Chairman of Boards of trustee were Prof. WS Kim (Anesthesiologist) and HJ Lee, MD (Internist). Seventeen members of anesthesiologists, internists and surgeons were the members for the foundation of in December 19, 1980 and the number of the members have expanded to 462 in 2005.

The scientific meetings have been held once in November and since 1988 with three times of refresher course lectures every year. From 2005 the Annul Congress of the will be held at the end of April or early May once a year. The titles of the scientific meetings have been focused on organization of ICU and intensive and critical care medicine, cardiopulmonary-cerebral resuscitation, sepsis and multiple organ dysfunction, acute lung injury and acute respiratory distress syndrome, transplantation, myocardial infarction and cardiogenic shock, tissue oxygenation, neurological emergency as status epilepsy and hypoxic injury and others.

The Korean Journal of Critical Care Medicine has been published twice since 1986. At the end of June, 2005 the first number of the volume 20, 2005 Korean Journal of Critical Care Medicine (KJCCM) will be published.

Korean-Japanese Joint Congress between Korean Society of Critical Care Medicine() and Japanese Society of Intensive Care Medicine(JSICM):
The first joint Congress of the Korean-Japanese Intensivist in conjunction with the 20th Anniversary Symposium of the had been held on April 7-8, 2001 in Seoul, Korea. At the Congress, Professor Ikuto Yoshiya, M.D., the past President of Japanese Society of Intensive Care Medicine, and Professor Shin Ok Koh, the Chairman of Boards of trustee of the , spoke about Japanese and Korean history of critical care medicine during plenary session. Iqbal Mustafa, M.D., the former President of WPACCM, and many renowned Korean and Japanese multidisciplinary faculty members have jointed and shared their experiences on patient care as well as "cutting edge" knowledge in the field. The second, third and fourth Joint congress of Korean- Japanese Intensivist had been held every other year alternately in Okayama, Japan in 2002 and Seoul, Korea in 2003 and Fukuoka, Japan in 2004. The organizing committee of the and JSICM have made the agreement of intersociety alliance and had had a ceremony and signed on it at the fourth Joint Meeting in Fukuoka, Japan. The 5th joint Congress of Korean Japanese Intensivist will be held in Seoul, Korea on April 29-30, 2005 and Prof Sung Su Chung will the Organizing Chairman. The organizing chairperson of the Joint Congress of the first, second and third and fourth meeting were Prof Shin Ok Koh, Prof Masahisa Hirakawa, and Prof Prof Hee Koo Yoo and Prof Tsuyoshi Maekawa.

The 13th Congress of Western Pacific Association of Critical Care Medicine (WPACCM) (www.wpaccm2004.org):
The foundation of the Western Pacific Association of Critical Care Medicine (WPACCM) was done in the Tokyo in July 26th, 1980. The Executive Committee members of the WPACCM at foundation were composed of President. Dr Quintin J Gomez (Philippine General Hospital) Vice President, Dr Radha Krishna (Dept of Anesthesia and ICU General hospital, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia), Secretary General, Dr Nobuo Nishimura(Dept of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine Nippon Medical School, Japan) and Treasure, Dr RC Wright (Director of Resuscitation St Vincent Hospital Sydney Australia). At Council meeting on August 14-16, 2004 in Bali Indonesia, the Indian Society of Critical Care Medicine as the representative of India was recruited as the new member country and the name of the Western Pacific Association of Critical Care Medicine (WPACCM) was changed to the Asia Pacific Association of Critical Care Medicine (APACCM).

The Korean Society of Critical Care Medicine had hosted the 13th Congress of the WPACCM (www.wpaccm2004.org) in conjunction with the 24th Annual Congress of the Korean Society of Critical Care Medicine on Jun 10-13, 2004 in Seoul, Korea. The 13th Congress of the WPACCM was focused on the "Mutual Understanding and Development in the WPACCM". The 1002 attendants enjoyed the scientific programs and social programs. The Scientific programs provided a strong content covering agonizing subjects in our daily practice and covered the depth and breadth of critical care. More than 120 invited speakers, very excellent specialists have been recruited from the region as well as afar. Aside from the insightful and informative scientific programs the daily tour program and fantastic and interesting social programs included Gala Light on a cruise boat has been organized on Han River on June 12, 2004.

World Federation Societies of the Intensive and Critical Care Medicine (WFSICCM), www.world-critical-care.org;
Since the foundation of the World Federation Societies of the Intensive and Critical Care Medicine (WFSICCM), the Korean Society of the Critical Care Medicine () had been one of the member societies of WFSICCM as the representative for Korea. The President and Secretary General of have been elected every two year and contact person and mailing address of the changed every time and communication lost between and WFSICCM followed by deprivation of membership eligibility of WFSICCM. The membership application of the had been submitted again and accepted in General Assembly of the 8th World Congress of the WFSICCM in Sydney 2001 with registration of eligibility. They will also distribute the official Journal of the WFSICCM to members. Professor Shin Ok Koh, MD, the former Chairmen of the Executive Committee of (1999-2001) has been designated in Board meeting of 2003 as the representative of communicating with WFSICCM. The 9th Congress of the WFSICCM will be held on August 27-31, 2005 in Buenos Aires Argentina and the President of the and two Korean colleagues have been invited as guest speakers.

The future plans of the :
The standard of the ICU and guideline for critical care will be defined. The fee for ICU care in Korea is too low and should be raised and graded by the medical manpower of nurse and intensivists and the ratios of medical facilities supplied. The training and education for the intensivists and certificate them as an independent specialty for critical care medicine will be a subject of concern of the . We, , have submitted our plans in an official document to the Ministry of Health and Welfare on July 1, 2000. The have organized committee for textbook for critical care medicine in Korean and will be published at the December 2005.
