THE AGREEMENT TO ESTABLISH AN INTER-SOCIETY ALLIANCE BETWEEN THE KOREAN
SOCIETY OF CRITICAL CARE MEDICINE AND THE JAPANESE SOCIETY OF INTENSIVE CARE MEDICINE
The agreement between the Korean Society of Critical Care Medicine (KSCCM)
and the Japanese Society of Intensive Care Medicine (JSICM) outlines the structure
and operations of the inter-society alliance. Both societies will comply with
the stipulations contained in this agreement until its official termination.
SECTION I. SCOPE OF AGREEMENT
1. Mission Statement
The organizing committees of KSCCM and JSICM¡¯s Joint Scientific Congress (the
Joint Committee) will pursue growth and development of critical care/intensive
medicine in Korea and Japan by marshalling resources from both countries to
better satisfy the professional needs of the staffs of intensive care units.
In addition, the Joint Committee will promote understanding between medical
specialists in Korea and Japan.
2. Organization of the Joint Committee
Ten members, five selected from each country¡¯s organizing committee, will manage
the Joint Committee. The president of each society will equally share the presidency
of the Joint Committee. The chairman of each society¡¯s International Relationship
Committee will co-serve as the secretary of the Joint Committee. Meetings for
the Joint Committee will normally be held annually during the period of the
joint scientific congress. Changes in the meeting times will require consent
from all members of both countries¡¯ organizing committees. The Joint Committee
could be held additionally by the agreement of all members of both countries¡¯
organizing committee.
3. Functions of the Joint Committee

Coordinate the annual joint scientific congress. |

b. |
Foster educational and research initiatives: The Joint Committee will
coordinate the collaborative research between KSCCM and JSICM. |

c. |
Manage the patient referral system: The Joint Committee will aim to facilitate
patient admissions by developing a standard referral system that requires
patients to have acceptable reason(s) and acknowledge the transferability
of legal rights from Korea to Japan and vice-versa. |
4. The Joint Scientific Congress of KSCCM and JSICM

The congress will be held annually and the host country will alternate
each year. |

b. |
The host country will be responsible for planning the scientific program
of the congress and decide on the scope of financial support for expenses
incurred by the invited country¡¯s participants. In this case, travel expenses
will include airfare (economy class) and two night accommodations for five
organizing committee members and three speakers. Moreover, two night accommodations
will have to be provided for ten free paper presenters at a hotel designated
by the host country¡¯s organizing committee. Changes to these conditions
will require consent from both organizing committees. |

Participants from the invited country will be exempt from paying the registration
fee of the joint scientific congress. |
SECTION II. TERMS OF AGREEMENT
By signing this document, both KSCCM and JSICM agree to the following terms:

The organizing committees of KSCCM and JSICM affirm that this agreement
will be effective commencing March 4th, 2004 |

b. |
In the case where either society wishes to extend the agreement in its
entirety or in part, that society will notify the other in writing of its
intention and both societies will meet to discuss the proposal. |

c. |
Upon mutual written consent, the agreement may be terminated or extended
at any time, without limit as to the number of extensions or renewals. |

d. |
In the event of a breach of the stipulations of this agreement by one
of the parties, the other may choose to terminate the agreement provided
a 30 days¡¯ written notice is given |
IN WITNESS WHEREOF KSCCM and JSICM hereto have duly executed this agreement
as of March 4th, 2004.
